Course

Entirely on 1,038 acre Red Mountain Ridge that makes up Ruffner Mountain Nature Preserve in Birmingham, AL.  Mined extensively for iron ore in the early 1880’s, Ruffner contains unusual terrain, unique mine ruins and beautiful new growth forests, 100% naturally reclaimed when mining was abandoned in the 1960’s.  Beginning and seasoned trail runners alike will find themselves challenged as the course runs across the ridge line with elevation changes greater than 4800’ in the 13.1 mile loop.  As is now tradition, this year’s edition will be run in the opposite direction from last year.  Terrain consists of approximately 0.5 mile of paved service road, 1.6 mile old dirt/gravel mining road, and 11 miles of single track of varying substrate and width.  New, challenging trails being incorporated this year to eliminate some out and back sections. 

Time cutoffs:  21K is 11:30 am, 42K is 3:30 pm, 63K is 8:00 pm.    

Course will be well marked with flagging, tape, directional signage and course sentries. 

Aid stations:  approximately every 3 miles give or take.   PowerAde, water, and bananas/chips, gels, etc will be provided.    Restrooms at start/finish and Wetlands trail.

Runners may switch distances up to race morning at 7:15 am.  Runners may drop from 42 and 63 to lower distances during the race. 

Post-Race Party/Awards

Pint glasses, schwag galore, and awesome awards provided as finishers cool down (as opposed to after the race is over).  Enjoy hanging out at the finish line with good food, beverage, and friends.
